PETALING JAYA:

Two Chinese tourists have been arrested for allegedly sending a threatening email claiming there was a bomb on a flight from Tawau to Kota Kinabalu after failing to secure a change in seats.

Tawau police chief Jasmin Hussin said the arrest followed a police report lodged by an airline staff member at about 3pm yesterday, Berita Harian reported.

He added that the pair, a 28-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, have been remanded for four days until Sept 27.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

It is understood that the couple had just returned from a holiday in Semporna and were scheduled to fly to Kota Kinabalu today.

They had contacted their travel agent to request a seat change, but received no response before sending the hoax email to the airline’s Kuala Lumpur headquarters.
