PETALING JAYA:

The government will make use of e-hailing companies’ system records to prevent drivers providing on-demand ride services from misusing subsidised RON95 petrol.

Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said this was among the measures would introduce to ensure that those requiring more than 300 litres of RON95 a month, including e-hailing drivers, do not misuse their privilege.

He also said that the government would work closely with e-hailing companies to confirm that drivers on their platforms are genuinely eligible, Bernama reported.

“If eligibility is confirmed, they can apply with their company’s support. We can verify the use (of RON95) through e-hailing system records to ensure that the fuel is genuinely used for work.

“The government will also restrict excessive daily usage,” he was quoted as saying.

Malaysians aged 16 and above with a valid driving licence will be eligible to purchase subsidised RON95 petrol, which will be capped at 300 litres a month for regular citizens, sold at a price of RM1.99 per litre.

Amir said petrol stations had already been provided with the necessary machines for the implementation of the initiative, dubbed Budi Madani RON95.

“Machines for in-store use have been provided, and most oil companies have activated systems at payment terminals, usable either inside or outside the stations.

“The preparations are sufficient, but we know nothing is perfect and new initiatives may face minor challenges. I hope the public can be patient. What matters is that the government will honour its promise,” said the minister.
