BALING: Two police officers have been detained on suspicion of involvement in an extortion case against a man who later died at his home in Kampung Asam Jawa on Friday (Sept 19).
Baling OCPD Dept Supt Ahmad Salimi Md Ali said the incident was reported by the victim’s 74-year-old mother after her 32-year-old son returned home and told her he had been detained by police, during which his mobile phone was confiscated by two officers who demanded RM200 for its return.
According to him, when the two were about to hand over the money, the man suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness before being declared dead by a medical officer from the Parit Panjang Health Clinic.
“The investigation at the scene found no injuries on the victim’s body and no criminal elements. A post-mortem at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital confirmed the cause of death as a sudden heart attack,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 22).
Following this, police opened an investigation paper under Section 385 of the Penal Code and detained the two police officers, aged 24 and 27, to assist in the investigation.
“Checks found that both suspects have no criminal records, and their urine tests were negative. The remand application was granted for two days until Monday,” he said.
DSP Ahmad Salimi added that a disciplinary investigation has also been opened against both officers and assured that his department is taking the incident seriously, urging the public to come forward with any information to assist the investigation.
