An unemployed man who pleaded guilty to murdering his parents in 2023 was sane when he committed the offence, the Kuala Lumpur High Court was told today.
Deputy public prosecutor Izalina Abdullah told Justice K Muniandy that based on a Feb 7 psychiatric report from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak, she was of the opinion that Afendi Agus Ali did not suffer from any mental disorder.
“The accused was aware of the nature and consequences of his actions, and he was able to know that the actions were wrong and against the law,” Izalina said during case mention proceedings.
“The accused’s mental state was stable on the date the report was written. The accused is fit to be brought to court for trial and is capable of defending himself.”
Izalina then applied for another date for the facts and sentence since the case materials were not brought to today’s proceedings.
Muniandy set May 20 for the facts and sentence.
On Nov 27 last year, Muniandy ordered Afendi to undergo a mental examination at Hospital Bahagia to ensure that the guilty plea made on Sept 6, 2024 was sane and voluntary.
Afendi was charged with murdering Agus Ali Omar, 82, and Darlisma Njatu Saleh, 72, at a house in Kampung Sungai Penchala, Jalan Penchala Hilir 6, Damansara, at 7.10pm and 7.20pm on Dec 9, 2023.
The charges were framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the possibility of the death penalty upon conviction.
