BYD‘s subsidiary brand Yangwang unveiled the U9 Extreme, a fully electric, track-focused hypercar based on the original U9 model. The unveiling took place at the Automotive Testing Papenburg site in Germany, where the vehicle in question dethroned the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ as the fastest production car, with a record-breaking speed of 496.22 km/h. For reference, the Bugatti hypercar previously held the title with a record speed of 490.5 km/h.

As reported previously, the updated design mainly retains the original look but adds options such as a carbon fibre roof, 20-inch wheels, and an enhanced front splitter. The rear comes with a diffuser featuring adjustable blades and a carbon fibre rear wing.

Inside, the U9 Extreme features a fully digital instrument cluster and a vertical infotainment system. The cabin is finished with carbon fibre and Alcantara upholstery. Other elements include bucket seats, a multifunctional steering wheel, and a T-shaped centre console.

The Yangwang U9 Extreme is powered by BYD’s Yi Sifang system, a four-motor setup with one motor at each wheel, delivering 555 kW per motor and a combined output of 2,220 kW (nearly 3,000 hp). It runs on one of the world’s first 1,200 V platforms, offering greater performance, efficiency, and weight savings.

The U9 Extreme also introduces a track-grade lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery with dual-layer cooling, capable of 30C discharge rates for superior thermal management. Other performance aspects include a chassis that incorporates BYD’s DiSus-X active body control system. This system uses dual-valve suspension to fine-tune vertical wheel movement in real time, enhancing grip during acceleration, braking, and cornering.

As of now, the price of this electric beast has yet to be announced by the automaker. However, it was revealed that only 30 units will be produced for the global markets.
