PETALING JAYA:

A former Astro employee facing 743 charges of modifying the company’s database system has been found fit to stand trial.

Deputy public prosecutor Rohaiza Abd Rahman told the Kuala Lumpur sessions court that a report from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Tanjung Rambutan confirmed that Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, was of sound mind and fully aware of the nature and consequences of her actions when the alleged offences took place.

“The accused is therefore fit to plead and stand trial,” said Rohaiza.

Nora’s counsel, Daniel Annamalai, acknowledged the findings and asked the court to set a date for the reading of the charges, citing his client’s need for additional time to arrange for bail.

The court set Sept 29, Sept 30, and Oct 1 for the next mention and to hear the reading of the remaining charges.

On June 26, the court took nearly two hours to read 132 charges. Thirty charges were read on June 4 before Nora fainted, forcing the court to pause proceedings.

Nora, who served in Astro’s commercial support unit, was accused of converting standard customer accounts into corporate accounts without authorisation, causing unauthorised changes to the company’s database.

The offences were said to have been committed between 2013 and 2020 at Astro’s office in Menara Icon on Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur.

The charges were framed under Section 5(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997 which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, up to seven years in jail, or both, upon conviction.

Nora claimed trial to all of the charges.
