KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — Replacement works for a leaking sewer pipe that caused a sinkhole on Jalan Burma in George Town, Penang, are expected to take up to five days.
According to Harian Metro, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Mayor, Datuk A Rajendran, said a single lane will be opened overnight and in the early morning to allow Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) to carry out the 13-metre pipe replacement work.
During the day, two lanes will be open to ease traffic congestion connecting the city centre.
“We discussed with IWK to conduct the repair work overnight until early morning with only one lane open. We also allowed them to start earlier so the project can be completed in a shorter time,” Rajendran told reporters during a site visit today.
He was accompanied by IWK Penang Chief Operating Officer Ong Chee Kuan and MBPP Engineering Director Cheah Chin Kooi.
Rajendran added that the cost of the project has yet to be confirmed as it is still under review.
The pipe replacement involves a 20-metre stretch of road, and further road closures may be implemented for safety reasons.
“Members of the public are also advised to plan their journeys or use alternative routes during this period,” he said.
The sinkhole at Jalan Burma and the Jalan Transfer junction, which formed around 9am yesterday, caused traffic congestion stretching nearly three kilometres due to road closures and diversions for safety.
