PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is the only country in the world to introduce a blanket subsidised fuel rate for its citizens during a time of economic turmoil, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The prime minister said, despite inheriting a large debt from the previous administration, the government has been able to implement this through proper governance.
“It takes a lot of time to explain, so let me provide some context.
“People often focus on education, but there are actually a series of priorities. Fiqh refers to setting these priorities, and that is what I call prioritisation.
“So, in this context — whether in religion, fiqh, or governance — understanding is essential.
“For example, today I want to explain a government decision. Each country chooses whether to lower fuel prices for its people. The government makes these choices based on circumstances.
“This is the context I call understanding. Our government is doing this despite inheriting high levels of debt.
“It is possible because we are working towards better governance, better results, and avoiding the mistakes of the past. If these can be reduced, the returns will be greater,” he said a monthly assembly of Prime Minister’s Department staff.
Anwar said this reflects the government’s wisdom in setting the country’s priorities from the top down.
“(For any country in the world to lower fuel prices when the economy is unstable), it takes courage.”
Earlier, Anwar announced that RON95 fuel will be priced at RM1.99 per litre for all Malaysians from Sept 30.
Police and military personnel will enjoy the new rate from Sept 27, while Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) recipients can access the cheaper fuel from Sept 28.
The fuel subsidy initiative, Budi Madani RON95 (BUDI95), will reduce fuel prices from RM2.05 per litre to RM1.99 per litre.
Anwar said all citizens with a valid driving licence — some 16 million people — are eligible for the RON95 subsidy, with a ceiling of 300 litres a month.
E-hailing drivers, however, will be able to enjoy the RM1.99 per litre rate throughout.
