MELAKA: A teenage girl died while her friend was injured after the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a lorry at a traffic light intersection along Jalan Pantai Belimbing yesterday.

In the 3.30pm incident, the victim, Nur Alya Qaisara Mohd Fadzli, 16, succumbed to her injuries after undergoing more than five hours of treatment at Melaka Hospital.

She was pronounced dead at around 11pm last night.

Melaka Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said investigations revealed that the victim, a Form Four student, was riding pillion on a motorcycle ridden by her female friend.

“Initial investigations found that the 16-year-old rider is believed to have run a red light before crashing into the front right side of a lorry,” he said in a statement today.

He said the lorry, driven by a 46-year-old man, was travelling from Krubong Perdana towards Krubong and was believed to have moved forward when the traffic light turned green.

“At the same time, the motorcycle ridden by the two students crossed the junction and collided with the lorry.”

Following the crash, the pillion rider suffered a broken left arm, right leg injuries, internal bleeding, and head trauma.

The motorcycle rider sustained head injuries and cuts to her hands and legs, while the lorry driver was unhurt.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
