IPOH: About RM1.4mil worth of flour were seized and two trailer drivers arrested by the General Operations Force (GOF) in Chuping, Perlis.
Northern Brigade GOF commander Senior Asst Comm Shahrum Hashim said the items were believed to have been smuggled into the country illegally and were found in two trailers, driven by the two men, at a roadblock on KM24 of the federal road in Chuping on Friday (Sept 19).
“Both drivers, in their 40s, were trying to smuggle the items into the country without going through inspection by the Health Ministry.
“We found 1,042 jumbo bags containing the flour in the vehicles,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 21).
“The two men were on their way to Alor Setar from Padang Besar,” he added.
ACP Shahrum said the matter would be investigated under Section 15 of the Food Act.
“There were no notices indicating the items were not for sale and the labels were incomplete.
“The items are meant to be sold in Alor Setar, Penang and Kuala Lumpur,” he said, adding that those convicted could be fined up to RM10,000 or face a jail term of not more than two years or both.
ACP Shahrum said the GOF are committed to combat illegal smuggling activities at the country’s borders in Perlis.
“There is no compromise in enforcing the law, especially when it involves smuggling activities,” he said, urging the public to continue to be its eyes and ears.
