KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 20 — A senior citizen lost RM76,740 after being duped by a non-existent investment scheme advertised on social media.
Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said on August 24 that the 62-year-old victim had come across an advertisement on Facebook promoting a stock investment scheme.
He said the victim, a former oil and gas industry worker, clicked the link and was directed to a WhatsApp group run by a woman.
“The female suspect, who introduced herself as an instructor, then explained the investment procedures to the WhatsApp group members.
“The interested victim invested a total of RM76,740, which was deposited into seven different bank accounts from August 24 to September 18,” he said in a statement today.
Azli said the victim realised he had been scammed after failing to receive any of the promised returns and was instead asked to make further investments to obtain lucrative profits.
He added that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
