KUALA LUMPUR: MMC Group’s unit Johor Port Bhd has invested RM71.2 million in two Post-Panamax container quay cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC) to strengthen its container handling capacity and competitiveness as a premier multi-purpose port in the region.
The new cranes, bought from and manufactured at Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd’s (ZPMC) facility in Shanghai, are designed to handle Post-Panamax vessels with greater speed and precision, enabling improved vessel turnaround and reliability.
Johor Port chief executive officer Md Derick Basir said in a statement that the acquisition reflects the port’s long-term vision to modernise infrastructure and meet the demands of global trade.
“We will also be procuring another two quay cranes, targeted to be operational in 2027. In addition, we recently purchased four new level luffing cranes worth RM72.3 million in June, to be installed at our conventional terminal,” he said.
Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said the investments form part of Johor Port’s five-year capital expenditure enhancement plan to rejuvenate its facilities and strengthen its position as Malaysia’s southern gateway multi-purpose port.
He said the investment relfects the company’s commitment to stakeholders and marks an important step in its modernisation journey.
“These new cranes will also support the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiatives by providing world-class infrastructure that boosts operational capacity, enhances cargo handling efficiency and improves service reliability.
“By strengthening the port’s capabilities, this investment will help attract new businesses and investments into the JS-SEZ, stimulate regional economic activity, and create new opportunities for trade and employment,” said Che Khalib.
The Association of Malaysian Hauliers vice-president Dzulfariqh said the investment and Johor Port’s modernisation initiative will improve berth productivity, reduce vessel and truck turnaround time, as well as facilitate a seamless and efficient cargo-handling experience.
The procurement of the quay cranes commenced on May 6, 2024, with all key milestones achieved including the installation of the main components and the successful factory acceptance test, culminating in their delivery on Sept 6 this year.
The cranes will undergo a 45-day site acceptance test before being fully operational.
